What are the 6 points of ID required when applying for a NJ driver’s license?
The NJMVC requires 6 points of ID plus Proof of Address when applying for a NJ driver’s license.
There are many forms of ID accepted, but here is a list we recommend. (The documents used for ID must be original – photocopies or laminated documents will not be accepted.)
- Permit
- An original Civil Birth Certificate (with raised seal) or valid US Passport
- An original Social Security card, High School Photo ID with a school record (i.e. transcript, report card, progress report)
- Proof of address – a piece of mail, mailed within 30-60 days that shows the permit holder’s name and address
- Glasses or contact lenses if required for distance
Note: We recommend checking with the NJMVC website www.njmvc.gov for the most up-to-date information on the ID required for licensing.
Do I have to notify my insurance company now that my 16-year old has a permit?
Yes. For your protection, your insurance company should be notified to see if coverage is necessary.
If your teen was a student of Carr’s Driving School and has completed the 6-hour permit program, they were issued a course Certificate of Completion. This certificate, (an insurance reduction certificate) should qualify you for a discount on your policy.
If your teen has good grades in school, you may be entitled to receive an additional discount.
Make sure you check with your insurance agent about these discounts.
What are the restrictions for a 16-year-old with a Special Learner’s Permit?
The permit driver must be accompanied by an adult in the front seat, who is at least 21 years of age and has had their NJ license for at least 3 years.
While driving with this permit, passengers are limited to any parent, guardian, or dependent of the special permit driver and one additional passenger. All passengers must wear seatbelts.
The permit driver is not allowed to drive between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am or use hand-held or hands-free cell phones or any other electronic devices while driving.
The permit driver is required to display two red decals on any vehicle they drive. (One decal is to be displayed in the top left corner of the front license plate and the other in the top left corner of the rear license plate.) These decals are available for purchase at any NJMVC.
Note: Please visit the NJMVC website www.njmvc.gov for the most up-to-date information regarding driving with a special learner’s permit.
What skills do I need to practice for the road test?
Here is the NJMVC list of skills tested:
- Driving in Reverse
- Stopping at appropriate signs
- Nearing corners
- Stopping smoothly
- Sitting properly
- Turning around (K turn)
- Steering properly
- Parallel parking
- Yielding to right-of-way
It is important for you to drive as much as you can and practice the skills listed, as much as possible.
You need to be familiar with the vehicle you’ll be using for the test. You must know how to adjust the seat, the mirrors and where the instruments and controls are for safely operating the vehicle in all conditions.
It is extremely important to stay calm and focused while testing. Make sure you stop completely at all stop signs and do not speed. If you need us to take you to your road test and/or feel you need practice before your test, we urge you to make contact with us @ 1 month prior to your scheduled road test date. We will do our very best to accommodate any time you contact us for services, but the earlier the better to insure you get the service you need, when you need it! (Refer to our Services pages for more details.)
Note: We recommend checking with the NJMVC website www.njmvc.gov for the most up-to-date information on the skills tested for licensing.
Can I use my own car for the road test?
Yes, if you choose to take the road test in one of your own vehicles, it must meet all of the NJMVC safety and testing requirements.
Your vehicle must have an up-to-date registration card, proof of insurance and a valid inspection sticker.
The vehicle needs to be clean and in good running condition with no safety hazards. All lights, signals and windshield wipers must be working properly. Red decals must be displayed on both license plates. (One decal is to be displayed in the top left corner of the front license plate and the other in the top left corner of the rear license plate.)
The vehicle is required to be equipped with a center emergency hand-brake located between the driver and the passenger seat or a push button brake easily accessible to the passenger.
Backup cameras and parking sensors are permitted.
Cars with illegal window tinting will not be accepted.
If you’re planning to use a rented vehicle, the testing driver’s name must be listed as a driver on the rental agreement.
Note: We recommend checking with the NJMVC website www.njmvc.gov for the most up-to-date information on vehicle requirements for testing.
Who needs red decals?
All GDL drivers under age 21, who are driving with a permit or probationary license, are required to display two red decals on any vehicle they drive. (One decal is to be displayed in the top left corner of the front license plate and the other in the top left corner of the rear license plate.)
These two removable decals are available for purchase at an NJMVC for a fee of $4.00 per pair. (Pricing is subject to change at any time per the discretion of the NJMVC.)
How do I reschedule my road test?
You can reschedule your road test online or by visiting the nearest driver testing center. The date, time and location of a road test are your decision.
If you choose to reschedule your road test online, go to www.njmvc.gov. You will need to enter your 15 digit permit number and the 5 digit validation number (both numbers are found on your permit) to reschedule your road test appointment. Note: If a road test appointment is currently scheduled, you will have to cancel that appointment in order to reschedule a new one.
If you choose to go to a driver testing center, an employee with the NJMVC will help you reschedule your appointment. You must have your permit with you and we advise you to bring the 6 points of ID plus Proof of Address.
Please call or email us, if you have any questions or need help rescheduling your road test. We encourage you to check with us if you are interested in any of our Road Test Services to be sure we can accommodate the date, time and location you are considering scheduling a road test.
What are the restrictions while driving with a Probationary Driver’s License?
While driving with a probationary license, passengers are limited to dependents of the probationary license holder and one additional person, unless the driver is accompanied by a parent or guardian. All passengers must wear seatbelts.
The probationary driver is not allowed to drive between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am. However, those that work at night can obtain permission to drive after 11:00 pm with a note from their employer.

The probationary driver is required to display two red decals on any vehicle they drive. (One decal is to be displayed in the top left corner of the front license plate and the other in the top left corner of the rear license plate.) These decals are available for purchase at any NJMVC.
