Do I have to notify my insurance company that my 16-year old has a permit?
Yes. For your protection, your insurance company should be notified to see if coverage is necessary.
If your teen was a student of Carr’s Driving School and has completed the 6-hour permit program, they were issued a course Certificate of Completion. This certificate, (an insurance reduction certificate) should qualify you for a discount on your policy.
If your teen has good grades in school, you may be entitled to receive an additional discount.
Make sure you check with your insurance agent about these discounts.

Do you have any tips for taking the road test?
Here is the NJMVC list of skills tested:
- Driving in Reverse
- Stopping at appropriate signs
- Nearing corners
- Stopping smoothly
- Sitting properly
- Turning around (K turn)
- Steering properly
- Parallel parking
- Yielding to right-of-way
It is important for you to drive as much as you can and practice the skills listed as much as possible.
Be familiar with the vehicle you’ll be using for the test. You must know how to adjust the seat, the mirrors and where the instruments and controls are for safely operating the vehicle in all conditions.
It is extremely important to stay calm and focused while testing.
Make sure you stop completely at all stop signs and do not speed.
If you need us to take you to your road test and/or feel you need practice before your test, we urge you to contact us 6-8 weeks prior to your scheduled road test date. We will do our very best to accommodate any time you contact us for services, but the earlier the better to ensure you get the service you need, when you need it!
Note: We recommend checking with the NJMVC website for the most up-to-date information on the skills tested for licensing and all road test requirements.
Can I use my own car for the road test?
Yes, if you choose to take the road test in one of your own vehicles, it must meet all of the NJMVC safety and testing requirements.
Your vehicle must have an up-to-date registration card, proof of insurance and a valid inspection sticker.
The vehicle needs to be clean and in good running condition with no safety hazards. All lights, signals and windshield wipers must be working properly. Red decals must be displayed on both license plates. (One decal is to be displayed in the top left corner of the front license plate and the other in the top left corner of the rear license plate.)
The vehicle is required to be equipped with a center emergency hand-brake located between the driver and the passenger seat or a push button brake easily accessible to the passenger.
Backup cameras and parking sensors are permitted.
Cars with illegal window tinting will not be accepted.
If you’re planning to use a rented vehicle, the testing driver’s name must be listed as a driver on the rental agreement.
